From: Manessische Liederhandschrift, figure 031: Kristan von Hamle. A courtly lady helps her lover to reach her up on the tower. In many literary accounts, however, the cunning woman suddenly lets him dangle in the air and so exposes him to the mockery of people when they discover him in the basket.

Location of Symposium: Conference Room of Special Collections, University of Arizona Library

This will be the fifth International Symposium on Medieval Studies held at the University of Arizona, Tucson

In the true spirit of a symposium, there will be no concurrent sessions, and the entire scholarly meeting will be a concerted interdisciplinary group effort to explore how people in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance viewed, discussed, fought over, and dealt with sexuality in its myriad manifestations.

Whereas previous topics focused on “Love, Marriage, and Transgression” (2003), “Childhood” (2004), “Words of Love and Love of Words” (2005), and “Old Age” (2006), the 2007 symposium will target one of the fundamental forces in human life, sexuality. Much has been written on this topic, but it remains a highly complex, sometimes even elusive issue which only interdisciplinary research can fully come to terms with.

Maximum participation: 25 speakers. There are plans to publish selected papers.

Languages accepted at the symposium: English, French, German, and Spanish.  Abstracts of all papers will be posted well ahead of the symposium.

Hotel Accommodations: I have made a special arrangement with Riverpark Inn (formerly Pueblo Inn),  $68./night (plus tax).  Transportation to and from the symposium (at the University of Arizona Library, Special Collections), will be provided.

All meals , refreshments, and receptions will be covered.

On Sunday, May 6, 2007, there will be an excursion to the world-famous Desert Museum, a most splendid natural display of the Sonora fauna and flora (entrance fee of ca. $12. will be covered as well).

Support from the Vice President for Research, Graduate Studies, and Economic Development, the Dean of Humanities, University of Arizona, UAMARRC (University of Arizona Medieval, Renaissance, and Reformation Committee), GEMS (Group for Early Modern Studies at the University of Arizona), the University of Arizona Library, Special Collections, and the Departments of German Studies, Spanish and Portuguese, Classics, English, Russian and Slavic, Psychology, and Anthropology is gratefully recognized.
