AATG – AZ Chapter

The Arizona Chapter had its Spring meeting 2024 at the International School of Tucson on April 27, with 15 people attending. Most pleasantly, the group consisted of a very healthy mix of High School teachers, University professors, and graduate students. One person is teaching at the elementary school (IST, Alisa Kaiser, our VP). After the breakfast and business meeting run by Prof. Albrecht Classen (President of the chapter), we had an excellent workshop on the use of AI in the German classroom, provided by Ute Hoefel from the German Institute for the Southwest, Houston, TX. She introduced us to a variety of AI webpages and demonstrated the best practices with AI. There was plenty of room to try out some of those. The meeting concluded after the catered lunch and further discussions.

Fall meeting 2023: The chapter had an immersion weekend in Scottsdale, attracting ca. 24 members at the Treffpunkt in Nov. We had a social get-together on Fri evening, and on Sat., several workshops focused on the meaning of language, regional dialects, and the impact of study abroad. Members came from all teaching levels, K-16, and from various parts of the state. This meeting was supported by a chapter grant from the national AATG.

Spring meeting 2023: In April, we had a one-day workshop at the International School of Tucson, with ca. 15 participants. The attendees were some graduate students, Elementary School teachers, High School teachers, and university faculty. Workshops addressed GEM, international exchanges between German students in Tucson and in Kenya, the film “Im Westen nichts Neues,” and the question how to strengthen the teaching of German.

  1. Deutschlandjahr Projekt – Oral History Interview Project for High School students

HS students conduct interviews with German immigrants here in Arizona. Interview will be recorded and transcribed. Results will be showcased in the spring of 2019 at ASU. Idea: Chapter meeting will take place at this showcase.

10 schools can receive a $250 grant to assist in their attendance at this exhibition.

  3. Presentation by Prof. Albrecht Classen “Deutsche Kultur des 18. Jahrhunderts in Arizona“; Focus: STEM and Teaching German and Language and Literature with an Interdisciplinary Approach. Small groups were assigned to read various chapters of Joseph Ochs work and had to think of STEM oriented task descriptions that students could complete.
  4. Presentation by Christiane Reves „Migrationskrise“ in Deutschland und den USA. Humanisierung der Debatte durch Simulationsspiele.”  Via station work student groups, in which its members had to determine their role within this family dynamic, and to make decisions similar to the ones refugees might have to make when they escape their home countries.
  5. Presentation by Dr. Russ Seaton “Rapid English Assimilation Developing English Reading and Speaking.” Dr. Seaton presented his 10 week circular reading and speaking program by which language learners attain vocabulary words via syllabication, tone, and songs.  Following this presentation, Simone Richert, his colleague, explained how she applies this method in the German language classroom.

Spring 2018

Our Spring meeting 2018 took place at ASU in Tempe, with our local colleagues at ASU (especially Eva Humbeck) offering great hospitality, funded by the School of International Letters and Cultures at Arizona State University, headed by its director, Nina Berman. Ca. 24 members joined, coming from all over the state, with a good number of new teachers who had not attended before. After the business meeting run by the Pres. Albrecht Classen, he and Melanie Mello (Secretary) offered a workshop on Exploratory Practice in the German classroom. After a theoretical reflection by Classen, he and Mello offered workstations and had the entire group work on individual stations developing their own ideas. After lunch, Nika Pfeifer (Vienna and Berlin), who is currently ‘writer-in-residence’ at the UoA in Tucson, gave a reading of her poems and discussed her work. The meeting concluded at 2 p.m.

Fall 2017

With the help of a chapter grant we could organize another immersion weekend at the NAU in Flagstaff, with 20 people from all over the state attending. We had two days of excellent events and workshops, combined with presentations (Oct. 27-28). On Fri evening we assembled at NAU, watched the movie “Kebab Connection,” discussed it afterward and continued with our social exchanges for several hours in one of our hotel rooms. On Saturday, after our business meeting, we paid a visit to the exhibit “Integrating Refugees” provided by the German Embassy. This was followed by a talk by Astrid Klocke on “Evaluating the Influence of Delivery Modality on Student Learning Outcomes in Introductory German Classes,” focusing on a comparative analysis of online teaching versus face-to-face classes. Subsequently, Melanie Mello was supposed to give a workshop on “Kreatives Lesen,” but she became sick. We moved our program up and first had a workshop by Albrecht Classen on the use of microtexts in the German classroom, such as proverbs, riddles, prayers, epigrams, aphorisms, etc., and practiced the theoretical premises with the group discussions of epigrams by Karl Heinrich Waggerl. Simone Seym concluded the meeting with a presentation and group reflections on how to deal with narratives about refugees, integration, xenophobia, etc.

Spring 2017

The one-day workshop took place at the International School of Tucson, Saturday, Feb. 25. Following the business meeting, Dr. Vera Dindoyal, ZfA, San Francisco, offered a two-part workshop on theater elements in teaching German, introducing strategies of getting students more involved in a practical fashion. Subsequently, Anja Schmidt from the Goethe-Institute in Chicago offered us a workshop on the entire notion of sustainability as a STEM-based approach toward teaching German at various level.

Fall 2016

Am 15. Oktober 2016 wurde auf dem Campus der Arizona State University in Tempe die alljährliche Herbstsitzung des Arizona Chapters der AATG abgehalten.

Vorstellung des German Iowa and the Global Midwest Projects und der Idee ein solches Projekt auch im Staate Arizona durchzuführen, in der Hoffnung, dass dies zu einem Digital Humanities Projekt ausgebaut werden kann, an dem alle Bundesstaaten teilnehmen werden. Dies könnte evt. eine Möglichkeit sein, enger mit den Universitäten vor Ort zusammenzuarbeiten. Daraus folgte dann auch der Vorschlag gemeinsam undergraduate als auch graduate Kurse durchzuführen.

3. 1. Vortrag von Lydia Heiss, UofA: Linguistic Landscape als Lernhilfe im Deutschunterricht an Schulen und Universitäten (9:45-10:15 Uhr)

In ihrer Präsentation zu “Linguistic Landscape als Lernhilfe im Deutschunterricht an Schulen und Universitäten” leitete Lydia Heiss zu Beginn kurz den Begriff der linguistischen Landschaften her und ging dann näher auf den pädagogischen Nutzten des Konzepts für den Fremdsprachenunterricht ein. Im Hauptteil ihrer Präsentation beschrieb sie ein konkretes Beispiel für den Einsatz von linguistischen Landschaften im Deutschunterricht an der University of Arizona und der Canyon Del Oro High School. Das Projekt “Deutsch auf dem Campus”, dass sie gemeinsam mit zwei Kollegen entwickelte, ließ Studenten die linguistische Landschaft des Campus erkunden, indem sie Repräsentationen des Deutschen in ihrem alltäglichen Umfeld suchten und den High School Schülern in einer Campus Tour zeigten.

5. Vortrag von Sara Lee und Carla Ghanem, ASU (10.30-11.30 Uhr)

In dieser Präsentation ging es darum Fremdsprachenlehrer mit praktischen Tipps und Unterrichtsstrategien im Umgang mit legasthenen Schülern und Studenten auszustatten.  Den Teilnehmern wurde erklärt, wie Regelkinder eine Schriftsprache erwerben und wo hierbei Schwierigkeiten für Menschen mit Legasthenie liegen. Es wurde auch betont, dass nicht jeder der unter einer Rechtschreibschwäche leidet auch gleich Legastheniker ist. Man müsse deren Rechtschreibfehler analysieren, den Lernlevel und den Hintergrund des Schülers/Studenten betrachten, um herauszufinden, ob ein Schüler bzw. ein Student evt. unter Legasthenie leidet. Um dies herauszufinden, bekamen alle Teilnehmer ein Merkblatt, auf dem u.a. Merkmale der Legasthenie aufgelistet waren.

6. Vortrag von Albrecht Classen, UofA: Wasser, Wasser und noch mal Wasser: Ökokritische Methoden für den Deutschunterricht (K-16) – besonders für Arizona! (11.30-12.15 Uhr)

Albrecht Classen hat uns ins seiner Präsentation vor Augen gehalten, wie einfach es ist, aus dem Thema Wasser einen semesterlangen Kurs bzw. eine Unterrichtseinheit zu erstellen. Man könne diesen Kurs bzw. diese Unterrichtseinheit aus einer ökokritischen oder aus einer kulturkritischen Perspektive herausplanen, in deren Mittelpunkt das Thema der Nachhaltigkeit steht. Prof. Classen nannte viele literarische Werke, die dazu herangezogen werden könnten u.a. Heinrich Heines ,,Die Lorelei,” Goethes ,,Der Zauberlehrling” oder Hugo v. Hofmannthals ,,Weltgeheimnis.” Darüber hinaus stellte er viele Methoden vor, die man in solch einen Kurs hineinarbeiten könnte, wie das Führen eines täglichen Tagebuchs, in dem die Studenten bzw. Schüler darum gebeten werden, aufzuschreiben, wie viel und für was sie Wasser verwenden oder das Malen von Stimmungsbildern zu Händels ,, Wassermusik.”

8. Vorstellung der Friendship Connection durch Kerry Marnell (12.30-12.140 Uhr)

Dieses Austauschprogramm wurde 1981 aus einer Initiative von Deutschlehrer/innen in Ohio in Zusammenarbeit mit Englischlehrer/innen in Hessen und Baden-Württemberg ins Leben gerufen. Schüler können im Frühjahr (über Ostern) für ca. 28 Tage in einer amerikanischen/deutschen Gastfamilie leben und im Sommer wird der Gegenbesuch empfangen. Dieser Austausch kostet derzeit um die $ 1.800.

9. 4. Vortrag von Marilya Veteto Reese, NAU: Winnetou ist tot, es lebe PUTREFACTION. Wie man einen Navajo-Anglo Bildungsroman ins Deutsche übersetzt (13.15-14.00 Uhr)

Prof. Veteto Reese stellte uns ihre neueste Übersetzung des Bildungsromans Putrefation Live, geschrieben von Warren Perkins einem Anglo-Navajos, vor. Sie schilderte ihre Schwierigkeiten bzgl. der Übersetzung der navajo Begriffe und einiger typisch amerikanischen Wörter, wie z. B. Bud(weiser). Teilnehmer wurden gebeten, sich einige dieser Wörter anzuschauen und Vorschläge zu bringen, wie man diese am besten übersetzen könnte.

10. Verabschiedung und Abreise (14 Uhr)

Ankündigung: Das Frühjahrtreffen 2017 des AZ Chapter der AATG findet am  24.-25. Februar 2017 in Tucson auf dem Campus der UofA statt. Zu dem Treffen wird Anja Schmitt, Language Consultant des Goethe Instituts Chicago, erscheinen und einen Workshop anbieten.

Spring 2016

The Spring meeting took place on Feb. 20, 2016, at the International School of Tucson. There were ca. 25 participants, some of whom came from as far away as Chinle (NE Arizona!). Thank you all. After the business meeting, run by Chapter President Classen, Prof. Chantelle Warner, together with her two graduate students Chelsea Steiner and Diane Richardson, offered a workshop on how to integrate literary texts into basic German language classes. Subsequently, the writer-in-residence, Hans Michael Speier (Berlin), offered a reading from his works, discussing some of his texts and what he was trying to relate. After the lunch break, Stephanie Duisberg concluded with a workshop on strategies how to increase students’ motivation to study a foreign language, i.e., especially German. Prof. John Alexander from ASU plans to step down as treasurer by the end of 2016, and Stephanie Duisberg has indicated her willingness to replace him. Elections will be held next year.

Fall 2015

The Fall 2015 meeting of the AZ chapter of AATG took place at the NAU in Flagstaff, Sept. 11-12, 2015. Organizer and Chair: Prof. Albrecht Classen; local organizer: Prof. Marilya Reese. This was an immersion weekend, with people meeting already on Fri evening for a social get-together and personal exchanges in Flagstaff as Marilya’s residence. The meeting was funded by a chapter grant from AATG, which allowed us to pay for the hotel rooms. The Dept. of German Studies at UA provided funding for the transportation for a group of students to attend. The Dean Michael Vincent of the College of Arts and Letters, NAU, also supported us with funding for our meals and refreshments on Saturday.

After our business meeting we began with a presentation by Rebecca Deadmon on the new NAU program of Global Engineering and Science Program, which includes a strong component of foreign languages. This was followed by Alex Wildgans, Berater für Deutschunterricht – Region 7: Berater für Deutschunterricht in den USA, who gave a workshop on how to develop types of competence in teaching a film, such as “Good-bye Lenin.” Before lunch, Dr. Björn Krondorfer, director of NAU’s Martin Springer Institute, gave us a special tour through the exhibition THROUGH THE EYES OF YOUTH: LIFE AND DEATH IN THE BEDZIN GHETTO that premiered at NAU last semester. This is a powerful story that forefronts the perspective of young people during the Holocaust, the artistically sophisticated installation is also available as a traveling exhibit in Arizona and beyond, and thus of particular interest to those of us in AATG-AZ.

Although we were only a fairly small group, we had a large contingent of graduate and even an undergraduate students. The next meeting will be held in Tucson, probably at the IST, around March 2, 2016.

Spring 2015

The Spring 2015 meeting of the Arizona chapter of AATG was held on March 29th at the International School of Tucson, and was attended by German instructors from a wide range of teaching contexts: elementary, middle school, high school, and university teachers. The day’s events were organized and led by chapter president Prof. Albrecht Classen, and breakfast and lunch were provided by the University of Arizona Department of German Studies.

At our business meeting we decided to spend our chapter grant money on another immersion weekend in Flagstaff, this time perhaps at a local high school rather than at NAU; further details will be determined later. Another important business announcement is that we will be looking for a new treasurer next year.

We were pleased to have Troy Alvarez, a former German major at the University of Arizona, give the presentation “Deutsche Geschäftswelt aus amerikanischer Sicht: Bericht eines Alumnus der UA nach Jahren von Deutschlanderfahrungen”. He was followed by Carolin Radtke — current Ph.D. candidate at the University of Arizona — who gave a workshop regarding using a graphic novel version of Faust in German language courses as an introduction to literature. Professor Classen presented on “Interkulturelles Lernen,” which continued a theme presented on recently by Prof. Renate Schulz at our Fall meeting in Flagstaff. Finally, Jess Duran explained how she uses interactive journals and classroom simulations in her high school teaching.

The Fall 2014 meeting of the AZ chapter of AATG took place at the NAU in Flagstaff, Sept. 5-6, 2014. Organizer and Chair: Prof. Albrecht Classen; local organizer: Prof. Marilya Reese. This was an immersion weekend, with people meeting already on Fri evening for a social get-together and personal exchanges in Flagstaff. The meeting was funded by a chapter grant from AATG, which allowed us to pay for the hotel rooms. Prof. Renate Schulz, Emerita, UA, gave a workshop on “Die Rolle soziokulturellen Wissens und Könnens im Fremdsprachenerwerb,” Prof. Albrecht Classen gave a workshop on “Sprichwörter: Kulturelles Wissen, Globale Anwendung,” and Alex Wildgans, Berater für Deutschunterricht – Region 7, gave a report about his function and role as Berater für Deutschunterricht in den USA. Honorary Consul Helge Jordan from Phoenix, joined us. Altogether twenty teachers participated in this workshop. We were additional supported by the Dean of the Department of Global Languages & Cultures and the Dept. of German Studies at the University of Arizona.

Minutes of the Spring Meeting of the AZ chapter of the AATG, April 26, 2014:

The spring meeting of the Arizona Chapter of the AATG was held on April 26, 2014, at Arizona State University in Tempe. After introductions and updates on the status of our German programs and enrollment numbers, we discussed chapter business and elected by acclamation a new vice president, Jess Duran from Empire High School, and a new secretary, Kerry Marnell. We were pleased to hear that Matthew Padgett of Chandler Preparatory Academy was awarded the scholarship to the AATG National German Exam summer study trip for which our chapter recommended him.

Following the business meeting, Dr. Classen presented information about the Goethe Institut’s Just Add German campaign, letting us know that a box of pamphlets for parents and incentives (bracelets, buttons, chocolate, etc.) is available to any German teacher for only $20 shipping. We discussed the most effective ways of encouraging students and their parents to enroll in and stay dedicated to our programs.

Renate Riedner of the Herder Institut (Unversität Leipzig), who is the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Guest Professor for Spring 2014 at the University of Arizona, gave a presentation titled “Didaktik der Literarizität im DaF-Unterricht,” using the poem “Bewegung und Stillstand” (Elke Erb, 1983) to spark a discussion of how poetry and other texts may be used in our teaching to promote students’ literacy in German. Another guest from the University of Arizona, current Max Kade writer-in-residence Philipp Weiss of Vienna, gave a reading of his short fiction piece “Malachit und Amphisbaena” (2012). To round out the day, Dr. John Alexander of Arizona State University presented on runes, focusing particularly on the Germanic and Anglo-Saxon runic alphabets.

Minutes of the Fall meeting of the AZ chapter of the AATG, Nov. 2013

Our Fall meeting took place on Nov. 16, 2013, at the International School of Tucson, a first for our chapter. That is an immersion school with a strong German program. After our business meeting, Carline Torweihe presented an overview of “The fastest, easiest and most fun way to learn German” (Pods 101). This was followed by a workshop by Albrecht Classen on how to utilize the theme of the forest on virtually all levels of German instruction (as part of his role as Multiplikator of the G-I). Following, Peter Ecke introduced some children tv programs in the German classroom. After our lunch, Kerri Marnell and Jessi Duran presented a short workshop on “Engagement Strategies in the Classroom.”

Minutes of the Spring meeting of the AZ chapter of the AATG, April 2013

On Saturday, April 13, our chapter met for its Spring meeting at the ASU in Tempe. Local organizer was Prof. John Alexander (thanks). After the breakfast we had our business meeting, followed by an introductory talk by the Honorary Consul of Germany, Mr. Helge Jordan. Subsequently, Andreas Neumeister, pilot in the German air force, Luke Airforce Base, presented his project, teaching new pilots, discussing not only the role of the German air force, but highlighting the methods and strategies used in his teaching approach. This was followed by a workshop by Prof. Albrecht Classen on how to utilize art in the classroom, applicably for all teaching levels from K-16. This was an extension of the trainer workshop at the G-I in S.F. After lunch, Sarah A. Lee gave a workshop on “Legasthenie: Hintergründe und praktische Hilfen für den Sprachlernalltag legasthener Menschen.”

AATG Meeting at AZLA: October 6th, 2012 / 11 AM – 12:00 PM

In Attendance: Carla Ghanem (ASU), Sara A. Lee (ASU), Hanni Meirich (ASU), Cameron von Berg (ASU), Julia Stephenson (Campo Verde High School)

The AATG meeting started out by getting to know each other.  We were happy to have one high school teacher among us.  We discussed issues that high school teachers might have when it comes to teaching German as well as recruiting more students to take German.  We compared “notes” on what the issues are at the university level vs. high school and what books are used. This exchange is very important and we wished to have had more high school teachers there, to be able to get a bigger picture.  We discussed the possibility of University representatives visiting and recruiting in high schools.  We are hoping that in the future we will have more attendees from other universities (beside ASU) and more high school teachers from all over Arizona, so we can connect better.

Chapter Herbstreffen 2012 (Sept.)

Minutes of the Fall (Sept. 7-8) meeting of the Arizona Chapter of the AATG, Flagstaff, NAU, 2012

The Fall meeting at the NAU, Flagstaff, was an immersion weekend meeting for the AZ chapter. Most of the attending members arrived on Fri afternoon, and spend the evening in important personal exchanges, discussions, and mutual reflections on issues pertaining to German from K-16. On Sat., we began with a breakfast and a business meeting, followed by a presentation by Jessica Wood on the new program “German For Engineers at NAU: GSEP – Global Science and Engineering Program.” Afterwards Anke Gorman gave a workshop on how one could utilize the principles of the Waldorf School program for German at the K-6 level or higher up. After the lunch, Albrecht Classen briefly presented the after-school German program that he runs at two Elementary Schools in Tucson, with undergraduates (majors and minors) serving as teachers as part of an independent study course. The meeting concluded with a workshop on how to approach “Landeskunde” in a more comprehensive, integrative manner, teaching both geographical knowledge and culture, literature, music, everyday life culture, etc.

Fruehjahrstreffen 2012:

The Arizona Chapter of the AATG had its Spring meeting at the Arizona State University in Tempe in April 2012. After our business meeting, Dieter Bollmann, the President of the Center of German Culture in Arizona, introduced his group and talked about plans for a Christkindl Market. Subsequently, Prof. Albrecht Classen gave a workshop on global learning in a multicultural context. The main speaker was Kathey Fegely, President of the AATG, who addressed the issues of how to strengthen the position of German at K-16, how to reach out to students, parents, administrators, and the public, and gave us tips how to develop promotional strategies. After lunch, Prof. Astrid Klocke introduced us to Filmkomoedien in the language class.

Herbstreffen 2011:

At the Fall meeting of the AZ AATG chapter, which took place at the University of Arizona, Tucson, November 5, 2011, we were happy to welcome Ursula Dintler from the Goethe-Institute, San Francisco. She joined us for the morning hours because she had come to Tucson to introduce the Madsen rock band (performed the day before at Empire High School, Vail). Our Fall meeting began with a talk by Lieutenant Colonel (Oberstleutnant) Manfred Orth from the Bundeswehr, who works as a Liaison Officer in Sierra Vista, Arizona. He discussed the role of the Bundeswehr in the USA, and the current restructuring process. Subsequently, Prof. Peter Ecke, UoA, gave a workshop  “Entwicklung und Bewertung interkultureller Kompetenz im DaF-Unterricht.” We concluded our meeting with a discussion of the chapter, its condition, and with the election of a new secretary, Prof. Astrid Klocke. IOur meeting was graciously supported by the Dean of the College of Humanities, UoA, Prof. Mary Wildner-Bassett, and by the Head of the German Studies Department, Prof. Barbara Kosta, UoA.

Frühjahrstreffen 2011:

The Arizona chapter of the AATG had its Spring 2011 meeting at the NAU in Flagstaff on April 8 and 9, organized and chaired by Prof. Albrecht Classen. Athough heavy snow was predicted, which came true on Saturday morning, we braved it after all and had a truly rich workshop for most of the day. Our immersion weekend began on Friday evening with a social get-together at the law firm Aspey Walkins & Diesel upon the invitation of the German lawyer Günther Ziwey. The group enjoyed the friendly atmosphere, the get-together of the local teachers and university faculty, along with the dean of Modern Languages, graduate students, and the speakers of the workshop. We also enjoyed the attendance of the Honorary Consul Bernard Otremba-Blanc. With the help of the chapter grant we could house the out-of-town attendees. The next day we began with a breakfast sponsored by the Dept. of Modern Languages at NAU, followed by a presentation of Dieter Bollmann from the Arizona Center for Germanic Cultures (Phoenix) about their organization. In the subsequent business meeting we revised our constitution to include a mandatory paragraph about the possible dissolution of the Chapter. Following we had three workshops: Prof. Albrecht Classen introduced the concept of how to incorporate sciences in the German classroom (Astronomie im Deutschunterricht); Bernhard Neumann from SAP Software, Scottsdale, gave a presentation about his global company, which is German owned; Prof. Marilya V. Reese presented her project on how to introduce the Holocaust to a German classroom. Because of the heavy snowfall, the immersion weekend came to an early closure because attendees needed to leave not to be stuck in Flagstaff.

Frühjahrstreffen 2010:

The Arizona Chapter of AATG met on May 1, 2010 at the University of Arizona. German Teachers from all over Arizona started mit Fruehstueck at 8:30.  At 9:00 the business meeting was called to order by Hans-Peter Kohlhoff, President.  The following items were addressed and discussed:  Treasurers report, AATG Project, The fall meeting, More participation with AZLA at their Fall Conference. State Tax Credit for German Clubs raised by Barbara Kosta, Astrid Klocke’s candidacy for the AATG Executive Committee and her interest in the local secretaries position and Pete Ecke reported on the SWCOLT Conference and a Goethe Institute test program in Mexico for German. Hans-Peter encouraged all to participate in a number of up-coming conferences.  All topic will be further addressed through our listserv, website and at subsequent meeting.  At 900 the group moved to a presentation by Zehra Otus, College Park High School, Pleasant Hill, CA,  Trainernetzwerk Goethe-Institute, San Francisco, CA: otusz@mdusd.k12.ca.us  The topic was:  Minifilme im DaF-Unterricht from 9:30-11:30.  From 11:30 to 12:15 Albrecht Classen did a workshop on Dramatisierungsstrategien in DaF.   After Lunch the chapter reconvened for a workshop conducted by Stephanie Duisberg on Recursive Writing as a Springboard to Oral Self-Expression Tasks. The day was adjourned at 2:15.  The details of the fall meeting will be announced shortly.

Minutes of the Spring meeting 2009:

The AZ chapter held its Spring 2009 meeting at the University of Arizona, Tucson, Feb. 28-March 1. The immersion weekend began with a social get-together at the Riverpark Inn hotel where 12 members were staying for the night. This was invaluable for the interactions that we miss so often. It was very invigorating for all of us. The next day we first met for a breakfast and then a business meeting, at which we examined our constitution, the rotation of officers, plans for the future, with idea for new immersion weekends, etc.

Subsequently Frank Müller from the Zentralstelle für das deutsche Auslandsschulwesen, Claremont, CA, gave a very informative presentation about the activities of his office, about the number of German immersion schools, or weekend schools in this country.

Next we had a most illustrative and motivating workshop by Jo Sanders, Anchorage, AL, on how to activate chapter members, how to develop new activities, how to get students more involved, and how to strengthen the German programs K-16 at large.

After a late lunch, at which also free books of German literature were handed out by Inge Schmidt, we continued with more personal exchanges, discussions of our individual programs, and so built a better network for our whole chapter. As a result, we have already concrete plans for our Fall meeting at ASU, Tempe.

Next Consul Lars Leymann, Consulate L.A., gave a power point presentation on the Berlin Luftbrücke.

After a break, Renate Mousseux offered a workshop on how to understand gestures, mimickry, and other bodily signs to understand cultural differences between the USA and Germany.

Lunch was provided by the local organizational team, especially Prof. John Alexander and Shana Bell (paid for by ASU).

Renate Mousseux continued the workshop until ca. 1:30 p.m.

Meeting adjourned at ca. 2 p.m.

Minutes of the Spring Meeting 2008

Meeting took place at the UA, Tucson, April 26

Attending ca. 30 members, graduate students, high school teachers, and college professors.

The business meeting (ran by President Prof. A. Classen) was followed by a practical demonstration by Judy Fullerton how to use the game “Der Sumpf” for practical exercises in language learning.

This was followed by a workshop by Dagmar Schalliol, Director of Educational Services, Langenscheidt, Oak Park, IL. She discussed: Whatever cannot be measured, will not be taught – From Standards to Advocacy, comparing the European FL standards with the US FL standards.

After lunch, provided by the UA (and paid for by the Dean of COH), Prof. Barbara Kosta gave a presentation on how to use film in the FL classroom.

Meeting adjourned at ca. 2 p.m.

At 9:10 am Albrecht Classen, President of the AZ-Chapter, started the business meeting.

3) At Tuscon High School the German program is about to be cancelled and supposed to be replaced by three classes for native Spanish speakers. Different actions were discussed. Members are encouraged to write letters.

4) Bericht der Schatzmeisterin (durch Albrecht Classen an Stelle von Gertrud Ashe, die gerade auf Urlaub war): gegenwärtiger Kontostand $ 1235.03

5) Kurze Diskussion über Erhöhung des Beitrages im AZ-Chapter.  Antrag: Der Beitrag wird auf $ 10.00 erhöht, bindend für jedes Mitglied mit Studienabschluss und Lehrstelle. Der Antrag wird einstimmig angenommen.

6) Neuer Testing Chair: Veronica Ostertag (spaetere Entscheidung durch Charlene Klumb, das Amt noch ein Jahr laenger auszuueben.

7) Ankündigung des Birke-Dexheimer Awards für Studienreisen nach Deutschland. Studenten in Masterprogrammen können sich anmelden.

8) German TV bietet Schulen und Universitäten die Möglichkeit kostenlos eine Schüssel zu erhalten. Antrag war am 1. Oktober fällig. (wird möglicherweise verlängert).

9) Ingeborg Schmidt, frühere Präsidentin des AZ-Chapter, wurde in den AATG Exekutiv-Ausschuss gewählt.

10) Empfehlung für Deutschlehrer, die eine Möglichkeit zur Weiterbildung suchen, sich das GOLDEN Programm anzusehen.

13) Dank der guten Arbeit an Junior High und High Schools ist die Zahl der Deutschstudenten an der University of Arizona gestiegen.

14) Judy Fullerton kündigt an, dass alle Neuzugänge für die “Videothek” von nun an DVDs sein werden. Sie wird eine Liste der zu Verfügung stehenden Filme auf der website veröffentlichen.
