Africans in Europe and Europeans in Africa, with an Emphasis on the German-African Relationship from the Middle Ages to the Twenty-First Century
2019 International Symposium at the University of Arizona, Tucson
Organized and chaired by Albrecht Classen, German Studies, and Praise Zenenga, Africana Studies
Date: April 4-7, 2019 (with the actual symposium on Fri and Sat., depending on the program). We strongly encourage visitors from out of town to utilize the Sunday to explore the region around Tucson with its great Sonoran desert.
Location: TBA, on the campus of the University of Arizona
Thematic Focus:
A symposium on the topic what the cultural, historical, economic, political, religious, and artistic relationships might have been between Africa—a huge continent, of course, but we do not want to limit ourselves to one country there—and the German-speaking world throughout the centuries (from now on, Germany). The pragmatic approach will be to bring together a group of specialists from a variety of academic disciplines for such a symposium, inviting both faculty and advanced graduate students to participate by addressing the many exchanges, contacts, travels between Africa and Europe from the pre-modern period until today. The long-term goal is to collect the best contributions and to publish the results in the form of an edited volume.
This is a self-supporting scholarly conference. But we are happy to acknowledge financial support from the depts. Africana Studies and German Studies, from the College of Humanities and the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
Registration: $120. (this includes all meals and refreshments, local transportation from the hotel to the conference site and back, and three evening receptions).
Advanced graduate students are very welcome to apply as well (registration only $60.)
Subsequently, we intend to put together a volume with selected and expanded papers.
