FAQ ABSENCES
Is _____________ (illness, COVID diagnosis, doctor’s appointment, doctor’s note, dean’s excuse, car issue/accident, family emergency, job interview, job shift, power outage, alarm didn’t go off, bad weather, preceptor responsibility, presentation in another class, etc.) an excused absence? Can I make up what I missed?
MIS 304 does not distinguish between excused and unexcused absences. Instead, we allow for a generous “best X of Y” grading policy for all categories of graded items. You can read more about that in the syllabus and simply treat the missed work as one of your dropped grades. If there is a situation that will cause you to miss multiple weeks of class, then I recommend inquiring with the dean’s office about an emergency notification that can be sent out to all of your professors and we will treat that in MIS 304 as a unique case and work with you individually.
I will be absent from exam 1, 2, or 3. What are my options?
We reserve an exam makeup day on the Tuesday of reading week for students who have missed exams 1, 2, or 3 for any reason. You do not need to contact the instructional team if you will be absent for an exam. Dr. Weber will share a form for students to fill out one week before the exam makeup date where you can indicate which exam you missed and wish to makeup. Our exam makeup day does not permit a student to retake an exam they already completed.
I’m going to be absent. Can I attend with the other section in class that week?
If you are unable to attend class with your assigned section in a given week, please do not attend the other section or request to attend the other section. The grading structure in MIS 304 is set up for all graded items to be assessed with a “best # of ##” calculation at the end of the semester. You can simply treat your missed ICKR and/or IC-Grp as one of your lowest dropped scores.
I’m going to be absent. Do I need to inform you or share a reason, a doctor’s note, a dean’s excuse form, etc.?
No, we do not need to be informed. If there is a situation that will cause you to miss multiple weeks of class, please contact the Dean’s office first and request an emergency notification, which will be helpful for all of the classes you are enrolled in. Remember that MIS 304 is set up for all graded items to be assessed with a “best # of ##” calculation at the end of the semester. If your situation will cause you to miss more than the allotment, please inform Dr. Weber and we will work together to come up with a solution.
I have a dean’s office excuse for a date that conflicts with an MIS 304 class meeting (not an exam date or the case competition). Should I send my dean’s excuse to the instructional team? Can I makeup the ICKR or IC-Grp?
No, please do not send us a dean’s institutional excuse form for missing a non-exam non-case competition class day. You cannot make up the ICKR or IC-Grp for the missed class, but remember the grading structure in MIS 304 is set up for all graded items to be assessed with a “best # of ##” calculation at the end of the semester. You can simply treat your missed ICKR and/or IC-Grp as one of your lowest dropped scores.
I have a meeting/presentation/exam in another class that is schedule for the same time as MIS 304. If I miss MIS 304 because of this, is it considered an excused absence?
No. Your registered class schedule always takes precedence. If another class is asking for your time during one of our MIS 304 class meetings, your responsibility is to go to the other instructor and inform them that you have class during that time.
I have an interview that is schedule for the same time as MIS 304. Is this considered an excused absence?
No. Interviews are not considered an excused absence. Almost every employer will be sensitive to your academic schedule and be willing to schedule your interview for a time that does not conflict with your class schedule. Remember the grading structure in MIS 304 is set up for all graded items to be assessed with a “best # of ##” calculation at the end of the semester. You can simply treat your missed ICKR and/or IC-Grp as one of your lowest dropped scores.
I’m sick. Should I come to class?
Please do not attend class if you are symptomatic to prevent the spread of infections. The grading structure in MIS 304 is set up for all graded items to be assessed with a “best # of ##” calculation at the end of the semester. You can simply treat your missed ICKR and/or IC-Grp as one of your lowest dropped scores.
I missed class. What should I do?
Read the schedule on D2L, watch the class meeting recording (will be posted the day after class), and connect with a classmate with questions. If you still have questions, please contact the instructional team.
FAQ CLASS ATTENDANCE
Is _____________ (illness, COVID diagnosis, doctor’s appointment, doctor’s note, dean’s excuse, car issue/accident, family emergency, job interview, job shift, power outage, alarm didn’t go off, bad weather, preceptor responsibility, presentation in another class) an excused absence? Do I have to attend MIS 304 in person?
Yes. ICKRs and IC-Grp activities must be completed in class to earn credit. Exams are also proctored in class.
What day(s) this semester am I required to attend class?
The schedule document in D2L lists all class meeting days
May I attend another section’s class on a week when I am going to be absent for my assigned section?
If you can not attend your scheduled class , you will not be able to attend another class meeting. The grading structure in MIS 304 is set up for all graded items to be assessed with a “best # of ##” calculation at the end of the semester. You can simply treat your missed ICKR and/or IC-Grp as one of your lowest dropped scores.
I have a ______________ appointment. May I leave class early and still take the ICKR or complete an in-class group activity for credit?
ICKRs and IC-Grps must be completed in person and in class to earn credit. If you leave class before the ICKR or IC-GRP is released, you may not complete it and will earn a zero for the assignment. Remember that the grading structure in MIS 304 is set up for all graded items to be assessed with a “best # of ##” calculation at the end of the semester. You can simply treat your missed ICKR and/or IC-Grp as one of your lowest dropped scores.
FAQ MAKEUP WORK
I experienced (illness, family emergency, travel, transportation issue, technology issue, field trip, athletics event, etc.). Can I makeup a missed assignment/DSM/ICKR/IC-Grp/Exam?
Assignments can be completed up to 72 hours late for partial credit. Please see the syllabus for details on the penalties by time submitted. DSMs, Playposit video quizzes, ICKRs, and IC-Grps, cannot be made up if missed. The grading structure in MIS 304 is set up for all graded items to be assessed with a “best # of ##” calculation at the end of the semester. You can simply treat your missed ICKR and/or IC-Grp as one of your lowest dropped scores. We offer an exam makeup day if you missed exam 1, 2, or 3 for any reason. Please see the exams section of the FAQ for more information.

May I request an extension on a DSM, ICKR, IC-Grp, or Assignment?
Assignments can be completed up to 72 hours late for partial credit. Please read the syllabus for details on the penalties by time submitted. Extensions are not granted for DSMs, Playposit video quizzes, ICKRs, or IC-Grps for any reason, including a dean’s office excuse. The grading structure in MIS 304 is set up for all graded items to be assessed with a “best # of ##” calculation at the end of the semester. You can simply treat your missed work as one of your lowest dropped scores.
Can I still complete the ICKR or IC-Grp if I don’t attend class?
No. You must be physically present in class to complete ICKRs and IC-Grp activities.
FAQ CASE COMPETITION
I don’t want to participate in the case competition. How and when can I opt out?
Students who opt out of the case competition are communicating that they would like their exam/case comp score to consist of exams 1, 2, 3, and 4 (which is cumulative). When group enrollment opens for the case competition, there will be a separate place for you to enroll in one of the case competition opt out groups.
I have a Dean’s office excused absence on the day of the case competition. What should I do?
Enroll in an opt-out case competition team. Your exam/case competition score will consist of exams 1, 2, 3, and 4 (which is cumulative). There is no make-up day or option for participating in the case competition.
My team members aren’t contributing to the case competition as much as I am, responding to my emails, or attending our meetings. What should I do?
Most interpersonal and effort-sharing issues can be prevented by agreeing on expectations before work begins. If it is an issue of unequal effort among group members, we ask that you work that out collectively with your team. Be open and honest in a non-threatening way about your frustrations and put together a plan to move forward. Peer evaluation is a key component of the group project grade and students may receive significantly lower scores than their teammates as a result of a lack of effort. The instructional team will only intervene (likely with the assistance of the office of the Dean of Students) when there are issues of severe abuse or bullying occurring among team members.
I’m not able to attend the case competition presentation day. Can I still work with my team on all of the preparation, but not present on the presentation day and earn credit?
No. Students enrolled in the case competition group must present on the case competition day in person to earn credit for the case competition. If you are unable to attend on presentation day, please join one of the opt out groups by the case competition enrollment due date. Once you commit to participating in the case competition, it is your responsibility to protect and prioritize that date in your calendar.
I’m only available in the morning/afternoon of case competition day. May I request that my group present in the morning/afternoon?
Case competition teams 1-30 will be guaranteed morning presentation timeslots. Case competition teams 31-60 will be guaranteed afternoon presentation timeslots. The remaining teams will be randomly selected for time slots. If you require a specific time slot, enroll with your classmates immediately when team registration opens. Requests for morning/afternoon time slots will not be granted after the case competition enrollment due date.
I thought I enrolled in a case competition group, but I don’t see my enrollment. May I request an exception to change groups?
No, you may not change groups after the case competition self-enrollment deadline. It is your responsibility to ensure you have successfully enrolled in a case competition group if you don’t want to be randomly assigned. You can check your enrollment at any time in the “Groups” navigation tab on the top of our D2L course.
What happens if I fail to self-enroll in a case competition group by the enrollment due date?
Failure to enroll in a case competition group by the enrollment due date indicates that you do wish to participate in the case competition and will be enrolled in a group at random.
Can I change my mind about participating in the case competition after the case competition enrollment due date?
No. If you opted out of the case competition by the case competition enrollment due date, you will not participate. If you enrolled in a group or failed to enroll in a group by the case competition due date, you will participate. If you are enrolled in a non-opt-out case competition team and fail to participate in the case competition, you will lose your eligibility to take exam #4.
I missed the case competition enrollment due date. May I request an exception to enroll with specific classmates or to opt out of the case competition?
No. The deadline for the case competition enrollment will be clearly communicated and it is the student’s responsibility to adhere to this deadline like any other responsibility in MIS 304.
My team is having a hard time coming up with ideas or getting started on the case competition. Can we request help from the instructional team? Can we give a practice presentation to the instructional team to get feedback before the actual case competition?
The instructional team does not want to give any single team an unfair advantage over their classmates. We trust that the amount of resources you have been provided and a bit more time in discussion and brainstorming among your group members will get the ideas flowing – likely to the point where you have more content to present than you have time for! We are happy to answer specific questions.
I signed up for the case competition, but on the presentation day I (1) got called into work, (2) have a transportation issue, (3) slept in, (4) got sick, (5) was travelling, (6) dealt with an emergency, (7) had an interview, etc.
You must be present at the case competition to earn credit. If you do not attend, you will have let your team down and lose your eligibility to take exam #4. If you provide a dean’s office excuse for the case competition day, then you will restore your eligibility to take exam #4.
How will I be graded on the case competition?
The case competition grading rubric is available on the case competition instructions and details PDF in D2L.
The judge(s) in my room were tougher graders than judges in other rooms. Will my team’s grade get adjusted as a result?
We provide the same rubric and instructions to all case competition judges and, but the case competition is subjective, and just like in real life you will come across people who are more (or less) difficult to please than the average person. If a judge is demeaning, offensive, or belittling to you or your team, please let us know through the judge feedback (instructions for this will follow the case competition). Note that a judge asking you difficult questions that you don’t know the answer to is not evidence that a judge is demeaning, offensive or belittling.
What is the dress code for the case competition?
The dress code is business professional (not business casual) and is described in the case competition instructions and details PDF in D2L.
What can I do if there are financial reasons preventing me from access to business professional attire?
There are two options available for students in this situation. First is the U of A Campus Closet:
https://asuatoday.arizona.edu/what-we-do/campus-closet
https://www.instagram.com/ua.campuscloset/
The second option is to visit a local thrift store like Salvation Army or Goodwill. Both have ample options for business professional attire at extremely affordable prices. Do not delay in securing your clothing for the case competition as business professional attire is part of your grade.
FAQ EXAMS
I cannot attend exam 1, 2, or 3. What are my options?
We reserve an exam makeup day on the Tuesday of reading week for students who have missed exam 1, 2, or 3 for any reason. You do not need to contact the instructional team if you will be absent for an exam. Our exam makeup day does not permit a student to retake an exam they already completed.
How can I take a missed exam on exam makeup day?
Attend class on exam makeup day (see the course schedule for the date). You do not need to do anything else to register for the makeup exam or contact the instructional team.
When and where is the makeup exam?
The date of the makeup exam is on the course schedule. The exam is held in your regular classroom at your regular class time.
May I complete more than one missed exam on exam makeup day?
No. You may only attempt one missed exam on exam makeup day.
I’m going to miss more than one of the first three exams. What are my options?
If you have a dean’s excuse for your exam, please inform Dr. Weber and he will work with you. If the missed exams are for any other reason, additional makeup opportunities will not be accommodated.
What do I need to do for MIS 304 if I have exam accommodations through the DRC?
Inform the DRC of your MIS 304 exam date/time adhering to the lead time requirements set by the DRC. Schedule a time with the DRC to take it on our scheduled exam day. It does not need to be at the same time as your class meeting, but it does need to be on the same day. Check with DRC for their current exam hours.
How should I study for the exams?
Reread the textbook chapters and rewatch the lecture videos. Take notes on the textbook chapters and lecture videos (handwritten notes lead to greater memory retention than typed notes). Terms/definitions and lists are always good candidates to study. Review the technical/software content from the assignments and in-class group activities. Study with friends and classmates. Use the additional study resources provided (exam practice quizzes, flashcards, and crossword puzzles). We do not provide study guides for MIS 304 exams or indicate what subset of the information from the textbook is more/less likely to appear in the exams. There are a number of great “How to Study” resources available in the “Course Information” section on D2L.
May I take the exam with another section?
No. You must take the exam with the section that you are enrolled in. If you cannot make your assigned exam time slot, then you may makeup the exam on the exam makeup day.
What resources may I use on the exams?
Only your memory. No resources (textbook, notes, Internet, mobile devices) may be used on the exams.
What resources are prohibited on the exams?
Written notes, digital notes, lecture slides, lecture videos, textbook, Internet, mobile phones, headphones.
What is the format of the exams?
Exams are 30-40 multiple choice or true/false questions.
Do the exams cover the technology tools we have learned alongside the chapter concepts?
Yes. For example exam #1 covers the concepts learned in chapters 1, 2, and 3 along with what we learned in Microsoft Excel (functions and pivot tables). While you will not be working in these technology tools during the exam, you may be asked to interpret formulas from screenshots and interpret results.
Will the exams cover technology news and guest speaker content from in-class meetings?
Yes
If I perform poorly on an exam, may I retake it or make up the lost points any way?
No, only a single attempt is given per exam and makeup points are not awarded. Remember that your exams/case competition is graded as best 4 out of 5, so a poor grade on one exam can end up being dropped and replaced with three other exams and the case competition.
Are exams cumulative?
Exam 1 covers only module 1.
Exam 2 covers only module 2.
Exam 3 covers only module 3.
Exam 4 is cumulative and covers modules 1, 2, and 3.
Does the format of exam 4 differ from exams 1, 2, and 3?
Exam 4’s format will be identical to exams 1, 2, and 3.
May I still take exam 4 if I’ve also completed exams 1, 2, 3, and the case competition?
Yes! We drop your lowest score, so if you’d like to improve on an existing score, you are welcome to take exam 4. It will never hurt your overall grade to attempt exam 4 (assuming you’ve completed exams 1, 2, 3, and the case competition) even if your perform poorly.
Who is eligible to take exam #4?
All MIS 304 students are eligible to take exam 4 (even if they have completed exams 1, 2, 3, and the case competition) with one exception: Students who register for the case competition but fail to present on the competition day are ineligible to take exam #4.
Do I need to do anything to register for exam #4?
No. Just check your seat assignment in D2L, show up to class for your assigned scheduled exam time, and you will be able to take it.
When is exam #4?
Exam #4 occurs during the University’s final exam week. The dates/times are assigned by the registrar, not by Dr. Weber.
Where will exam #4 be held?
In your regularly scheduled classroom like exams 1, 2, and 3.
May I take exam #4 with another section?
No, you must take your exam with your assigned section.
I can’t make it to exam #4. What are my options?
If you are missing exam #4 due to a dean’s office excused absence, please send the dean’s excuse form to the MIS 304 contact form and we will work out an alternate arrangement. If you are missing exam #4 for any other reason (travel plans, personal issues, family gathering, vacation, etc.) you will not be granted an alternative arrangement.
FAQ ASSIGNMENTS
I’m experiencing a technical issue with Pearson MyLab (logging in, opening the assignment, etc.). What should I do?
My first recommendation is to disable any Internet browser extensions, try a different browser, or try a different computer. That usually addresses 95%+ of issues. If it is still not working, please contact Pearson technical support. They offer 24/7 support. Please note that the MIS 304 instructional team is unable to provide technical support for Pearson MyLab.
I’m getting an error or have an issue in MS Excel, WordPress, MS Access, PowerBI, Tableau, or Python. When/where can I get help for my question?
Homework help is not given via email. There are many opportunities throughout the week for one-on-one help in Dr. Weber’s office hours and in the open lab office hours. You can find the times/locations in D2L under “Course Information.”
I completed an assignment by the due date but I forgot to submit it in D2L. Can I still earn credit for the assignment?
Assignments must be submitted in D2L by the due date to be considered for full grading. They can be submitted up to 72 hours late for partial credit. Assignments completed but not submitted in D2L will be treated as zero scores, but remember that assignment grades consist of your best 5 out of 7 assignment scores and you have flexibility for making mistakes like this without it having a significant impact on your final grade.
I was assessed an error code 91 on my assignment, indicating that I submitted the incorrect file, the starting file, or a file that can not be opened by the grading team. Can I resubmit this and still receive credit?
It is your responsibility to ensure that you attach the correct file. After you attach your file, you can download it to verify its contents. If the file the grading team receives is empty, the original template, or a file they cannot open, the only plausible explanations are that you attached the wrong file or you attached the file to D2L before saving. Error code 91s can not be appealed, but remember that assignment grades consist of your best 5 out of 7 assignment scores and you have flexibility for making mistakes like this without it having a significant impact on your final grade.
I finished an assignment, but after it was due I realized I never submitted the file(s) in D2L. Can I still have a chance to submit my assignment for points? Can I show you proof that I finished it? Can I use the assignment grade appeal for a situation like this?
Assignments can be submitted up to 72 hours late for varying degrees of late penalties (25% to 75% penalties based on how late). After 72 hours, no assignment submissions will be accepted. It does not matter if you have documentation in your file properties that your assignment was completed on time. What is required in MIS 304 is for the correct file(s) to be submitted to the correct assignment drop box by the correct due date/time. The grade appeal form/process is for requesting corrections to errors in grading, not for situations like this. Remember that your assignments are graded best 5 of 7 and you have flexibility for making mistakes like this without it having a significant impact on your final grade.
I submitted an assignment file to the wrong assignment drop box. What can I do to fix this?
Before the assignment due date, you can resubmit and we will grade your latest submission. After the due date, you cannot make this correction. Remember that your assignments are graded best 5 of 7 and you have flexibility for making mistakes like this without it having a significant impact on your final grade.
Can I use the grade appeal form to make corrections to my already-graded assignment to improve my grade?
No, the grade appeal form is used to fix error codes that were incorrectly assigned to you by our grading team.
I already completed assignments 1 through 5 and I’m happy with the grades I earned on them. Can I just skip completing assignments 6 and 7?
Your assignments are graded as the best 5 of 7 at 60 points each for 300 possible points. If you’re happy with your scores on assignments 1 through 5 your assignment grade will not suffer if you decide to skip completing assignments 6 and 7. But remember that exam #3, like exams #1 and #2, will contain questions regarding the assignments that would be very difficult to answer without having completed them. Questions asked to the instructional team before exam #3 along the lines of, “I didn’t do assignments 6 and 7. What do I need to know from those assignments to answer the questions on the exam?” will not be answered.
FAQ GRADES
What is my current grade in MIS 304?
Given the nature of our “drop # of ##” grading scheme for graded items, mid-semester grade calculations can be ambiguous. However, there is a grade forecaster tool that will be made available to you in D2L mid-semester. It will be located under “Course Information.”
What do I need to do for the rest of the semester to earn an A/B/C?
Please use the grade calculator tool that will be made available to you in D2L midway through the semester. Dr. Weber will announce it in class. It will be located under “Course Information.”
What can I do for extra credit?
A limited number of extra credit opportunities may be available. Availability of extra credit opportunities are not guaranteed and are not available upon request at the end of the semester. These opportunities will be announced either in class or through D2L announcements.
When will my assignment grades be posted in D2L?
The instructional team commits to having grades entered to D2L within one week of the assignment’s due date. Note that for assignments, since we accept them as late as 72-hours late for partial credit, the grading window for all submissions starts at that time.
How can I appeal an assignment grade?
We do our best to apply grades correctly, but given the number of assessments we grade, there are sometimes mistakes made by our grading team. If you observe that you were incorrectly graded, please use the Grade Appeal links found in D2L under “Assignments.” The grade appeal form must be filled out and sent as your appeal. The grade appeal in D2L is not to be used to resubmit your assignment deliverable attachments. One exists for each assignment. Grade appeals through any other means (e.g. email) will be ignored.
(At the end of the semester) Are final course grades rounded? What if I’m only one, two, or three points away?
As stated on the syllabus, grades are not rounded. Thus 599 points is an E, 699 points is a D, 799 points is a C, and 899 points is a B.
(At the end of the semester) Is there anything I can do to improve my grade? Can you assign me an additional extra credit assignment to help improve my grade?
Extra credit opportunities may be available during the course of the semester. No additional extra credit opportunities will be available at the end of the semester. Nothing can be done to improve your grade besides doing well on the remaining exams. The instructional team would be happy to meet with you and discuss strategies for success on the exams.
(At the end of the semester) I realize that something from earlier in the semester was graded wrong and I never appealed it. Can I appeal now to help improve my grade?
After the window for grade appeals closes, grade appeals may not be made.
(At the end of the semester) My (scholarship / athletics eligibility / club involvement / fraternity / etc.) depends on my grade being higher. Can you please improve my grade?
Exceptions will not be made for grade improvements. All students will be treated and assessed equally when it comes to assigning letter grades from the points earned.
(At the end of the semester) Are any of the following valid reasons to request a grade improvement or a way to make up points?
-I tried really hard this semester.
-I don’t think my grade reflects the work I put in.
-The grade I earned is not reflective of the student I am.
-I always attended class, completed all my work, and completed it on time.
-I had bad teammates for IC-Grp and/or the case competition.
-I was successful in my other classes.
-I’m at risk of losing my scholarship.
-I’m at risk of losing my athletics eligibility.
None of these are valid reasons to request a grade improvement or make up points. All students will be treated and assessed equally when it comes to assigning letter grades from the points earned.
(At the end of the semester) It’s been a really difficult semester with academics, personal issues, family emergencies, mental health issues, illness, injury, etc. Can I request that Dr. Weber improve my grade because of this?
First of all, if this has been the case this semester, I am extremely sorry this has been the case and I have complete empathy for you. It breaks my heart when I hear about the struggles of my students. I’m not a therapist or counselor, but I’m happy to meet with you and be a listening ear and hopefully an encouragement. With respect to your grade, only in the cases of (1) a dean’s office emergency notification or (2) a DRC accommodation applicable to the situation will I work individually with students on an alternate path to move forward. As much as I empathize, it would be unfair to the class as a whole for me to be in a situation where I am making the determination of who is eligible for special treatment and who should be denied. Our dean of students and DRC offices can handle that much better than individual faculty members.
(At the end of the semester) I recognize that an error was made in my grade calculation. What should I do?
Please contact the instructional team via email if an error was made in your grade calculation so we can remedy it quickly before final grades are posted.
