This NSF-funded experiment is designed to characterize seismicity and the crustal seismic velocities beneath the San Francisco Volcanic Field in Northern Arizona which has been active for the past ~6 Myr and last erupted during the highly explosive Sunset Crater eruption in 1085 CE. The figure below shows an overview of the experiment. The transparent red region is the site of 46 nodal seismometers that will record continuously between August 2023 and August 2024. The larger transparent white region will host 650 nodal seismometers during Fall 2024 and will record 4 borehole shots (red stars) as well as local seismicity. Flagstaff, AZ and Sunset Crater are both marked on the map.
