Yuhua and Lindsay published a journal paper at Cognitive Science: “Exploring how generating metaphor via insight versus analysis affects metaphor quality and learning outcomes”. Congrats!

Vicky is on sabbatical AY2024-2025. During the Fall 2025 semester, Vicky is visiting Kara Federmeier and her lab at the Beckman Institute and Department of Psychology at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign (UIUC). But Vicky will continue research and mentoring via virtual individual and lab meetings with our lab members back at the University of Arizona.

June 2024

Vicky received the University of Arizona RII Core Facilities Pilot Program fund (~10K) for academic year 2024-2025, for an fMRI study on metaphor embodiment, to be led by Cagatay in the coming year. Yay!

Laura presented our research on metaphor comprehension and production in individuals with high and low autistic trait in RaAM in Macerata, Italy! Well done, Laura!

Lab dinner in Pavia, Italy. Laura, Lindsay, and Cagatay together with the Italian graduate student Maddelena are collecting data for the project on metaphoric learning in Italian learners of English.

May 2024

The graduate students and Vicky are going to Pavia Italy for an NSF-funded collaboration with Professor Valentina Bambini and her Neurolinguistics Lab from 22 May – 21 June. Buon viaggio!

Nahyun Kim who is starting her PhD with Dr. Lai and joining the lab in Fall 2024, won the Lynn Nadel Fellowship! The Nadel fellowship is offered to a first year student in our CNS program who is likely to pursue a cognitive science minor and shows outstanding potential for research in CNS/Cognitive Science. Welcome to Tucson and congrats!

The lab had an EEG analysis training from 19-21 May. The instructor was Dr. Eric Fields. He was awesome and we all learned a lot.

Sheridan won the W.A. Franke Honors College Exploratory Mini-Grant (~4K) to conduct her honors thesis on metaphor and embodiment in the academic year 2024-2025. Congrats!

Laura won the CNS seminar (weekly meeting of the CNS program) participation award! Yay!

Mourad has received a dissertation research grant from the National Federation of Modern Language Teachers Association (NFMLTA) and National Council of Less Commonly Taught Languages (NCOLCTL). This grant supports graduate student research in the fields of applied linguistics and language education with grants focused on the teaching and learning of less commonly taught languages (all languages except English, Spanish, French, and German). Many congrats, Mourad!

Valeria and Vicky published another paper: “Can Irony Regulate Negative Emotion? Evidence from Behavior and ERPs” at the journal Cognition and Emotion. Many congrats!

Laura received a travel grant/bursary from the Association for Researching and Applying Metaphor (RaAM) to present a poster at the 8th RaAM specialized seminar in Macerata, Italy, in June. Congrats!!

Yuhua, a collaborating PhD student at Northwestern, will be presenting her work with Lindsay and Vicky on Hidden brain states as neural correlates of verbal creativity during metaphor generation at Cognitive Neuroscience Society (CNS) Conference. She will also be presenting “Aha! moments in metaphor generation implications for learning and creative outputs” at the Society for the Neuroscience of Creativity (SfNC) Conference.

Matt accepted an offer to work as a postdoctoral researcher at the Basque Center on Cognition, Brain and Language. He will be decoding brain signals and speech signals to answer questions about language and cognition. Huge congrats!

We presented at the 36th Annual Conference on Human Sentence Processing (HSP) in Pittsburgh March 9-11. Laura presented her ERP findings on emotional metaphors, and Matt will presented his latest findings on emotional language, prediction, and negativity bias in healthy older adults. We will be presenting two posters at HSP 2022 (Conference on Human Sentence Processing). Matt will present “Changes in the affective representation of a word in younger and older adults” and Valeria will present “Irony as a form of Emotion Regulation – Evidence from Behavior and ERPs”.

We will also present two short talks at ELM2 (Experiments in Linguistic Meaning). Matt will talk about affective representations cued by words in context in younger and older adults, and Valeria will talk about how irony regulates negative emotion in speakers and listeners.

Katya will present “The effects of metaphoric instruction on neural representations of scientific concepts” at the 29th Annual Meeting of the Cognitive Neuroscience Society (CNS). YAY!

Stanley received two awards from Germany: Doctoral Candidates and Young Academics, and Scientists (DAAD) and Studienstiftung des Abgeordnetenhauses von Berlin. He will be working on pragmatics at the Centre for General Linguistics (ZAS) in Berlin, starting in October 2017, for a period of one year. Congrats, Stanley!

Emma is awarded the Undergraduate Biology Research program for summer 2017. She will be working on a neuroscience project on spatial navigation using rats with Dr. Jean-Marc Fellous, and a cognitive neuroscience project on human emotion and language with us. Congrats, Emma!
