Strengthening the Preparation of Secondary Mathematics Teachers

The UArizona Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Project is funded by the National Science Foundation, Award 2446769, supporting mathematics undergraduate majors in the Secondary Mathematics Education (SME) Program to become effective teachers.
The project aims to increase the number of mathematics teachers in Arizona who are equipped with a strong background in mathematics and pedagogy, and skilled to be responsive to students’ different needs. Studies have shown the benefits for students of having teachers who come from the same local community. With different project partners, we plan to recruit undergraduate students, particularly local students, into the SME Program
Project Activities
There are two ways for students to participate in this project: becoming a Noyce Scholar and/or a Noyce Intern.
The Noyce Scholarship
Students who join the project as Noyce Scholars will receive a scholarship of $10,775, and will be supported in the following activities:
- Designing a senior Project
- Attending and presenting at the Mathematics Educator Appreciation Day (MEAD) Conference
- Attending and participating in Mathematics Education Seminar with faculty and graduate students
- Participating in and leading Family Math Workshops
To be eligible to apply to become a Noyce Scholar, a student must: 1) be enrolled in the SME-Program at UArizona, 2) hold junior or senior status, and 3) have good academic standing. Participating in AmeriCorps tutoring or other Noyce Internship opportunities would make you a competitive applicant to the Noyce Scholarship.
NOTE: The scholarship application requires 2 letters of recommendation. The application will ask for the reference names who will submit a letter on your behalf.
The Noyce Internships
Students who join the project as Noyce Interns will be supported in becoming
- a trained Tutor working with middle or high school students, or
- an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (UTA) for courses in elementary teacher education in the UA Math Department, or
- an instructor in a Summer Algebra Academy through the UA Early Academic Outreach Office
Project Partners
- The Tucson Unified School District, the largest high-needs school district in Tucson
- The Center for Recruitment and Retention of Mathematics Teachers at UArizona
- The Office of Early Academic Outreach at UArizona
