I am looking for two highly motivated graduate students to join my research lab, MADE @ UArizona, in the Department Systems and Industrial Engineering at the University of Arizona, starting in Fall 2025. Students will contribute to creating innovative computational approaches for advanced manufacturing applications and/or evaluating the impact of new tools and approaches on designers’ decision making. Students will receive hands-on mentorship from myself, senior PhD students, postdocs, and other researchers in an inclusive, welcoming environment. Specific research topics include:
- Machine learning, manufacturability assessment, and additive manufacturing
- 3D CAD model manufacturing cost estimation assessment
- Sustainable decision making in engineering design, with methods drawing from life cycle assessment, design science, human factors, and engineering education
The positions are fully funded, including full tuition support, a stipend, and benefits. Depending on interest and qualifications of applicants, the position can include research and teaching assistantships. The initial appointment is for one academic year, with the possibility of renewal based on satisfactory performance.
Qualifications:
- B.S. and/or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial and Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or related fields.
- Strong programming skills (e.g., Python, MATLAB)
- Prior experience working with 3D CAD models, manufacturing processes including machining and additive manufacturing
- Leadership skills, writing skills, and a drive to make tangible contributions in the lives of others
If you are interested, please email me with a statement of your research interests (explicitly mentioning which of the above topic areas you are interested in) and description of relevant experiences, along with a CV (Dr. Hannah Budinoff at hdb@arizona.edu).
