Faculty

Yang Song

I am an Earth system scientist with enthusiasm for integrating multi-discipline knowledge and multi-scale data to better model and understand climate-terrestrial ecosystem interactions. I am now an assistant professor in the Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences. I am also a faculty member of the UA Graduate Interdisciplinary Program, Ecosystem Genomics. Before joining UA, I was first a postdoctoral Research Associated and then an R&D staff scientist at the Environmental Sciences Division and the Climate Change Science Institute, Oak Ridge National Lab. I hold a Ph.D. in Atmosphere Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign in 2015, working with Prof. Atul Jain, a Master in Ecology from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a Bachelor in Environmental Engineering from the University of Science and Technology in Beijing. Besides exploring scientific questions, I enjoy exploring classical and Broadway music.

Open positions

If you are interested in our diverse and novel research involving multi-disciplines (e.g., atmospheric science, ecology, soil microbiology, data science), please consider applying for the graduate student or postdoc positions in my lab. Welcome to send me your CV and research interests for further discussion.

Patrick John Neri, Ph.D. candidate

Patrick was born in the suburbs of the Twin Cities, Minnesota. He completed his undergraduate degree in physics at Gustavus Adolphus College and is currently seeking his Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Arizona. Always curious about the world around him, Patrick found himself drawn to physics and earth systems in high school. In pursuing those interests, Patrick is now working on researching how to utilize advances in SIF-based photosynthesis modeling to improve ESM’s in the future.

Changpeng Fan, Ph.D. candidate

Changpeng is a Ph.D. candidate in the Dept. of Hydrology and Atmospheric Science at the University of Arizona. He is interested in climate and land feedback, focusing on the hydrology cycle, microbial-mediated soil carbon, nutrient cycle, and vegetation dynamics. He is a badminton fanatic. He also loves reading swordsman fiction in his free time.

Tianyi Hu, M. S. candidatedidate

I am a first-year M.S. student in the Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Arizona. I got my bachelor’s degree in atmospheric sciences at Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology. During my undergraduate study, I became interested in mathematical models and participated in several mathematical modeling contests. My current research interests are in the development of the Earth system model. Outside of academia, I enjoyed road trips, cycling, hiking, and various sports.

Sabrina Wilson, M.S. candidate

She/Her

I am from southeast New Mexico and have a BS in Astrophysics and Chemistry from Northern Arizona University. I enjoy hiking, mountain biking, and tending to my native pollinator garden. Beginning in Fall 2022, I will be pursuing a Master’s in Atmospheric Science under the mentorship of Dr. Yang Song. My research interests include human-ecosystem interactions and climate-land feedback, focusing on microbial mediation and carbon sequestration and how these interactions shape our environment on a larger scale.
